VILA NOVA DE CERVEIRA

A Cultural Haven with Viking Heritage

Vila Nova de Cerveira is a delightful town nestled along the banks of the River Minho near the Spanish border. Founded in the 14th century, the town boasts a rich history reflected in its architecture and cultural traditions. The Castle of Vila Nova de Cerveira, a medieval fortress built during the reign of King D. Dinis, stands as a testament to the town’s defensive past. Today, its walls and towers offer panoramic views of the surrounding river valley. Another historical highlight is the Igreja Matriz, the main church, which combines elements of Baroque and Rococo design.

Vila Nova de Cerveira is rich in traditions, which are celebrated through festivals and local events. The Feira Semanal, the weekly market, is a gathering where locals and visitors can buy fresh produce, crafts, and regional specialties. The Festival de Cerveira, a summer event, brings music, dance, and folklore to the town’s streets. The annual Viking festival every summer to celebrate the influence from the Vikings settled down in this region long time ago. At this festival we often have heard old songs performed in the Swedish language, something that is surprising for us coming from Sweden.

Vila Nova de Cerveira is famously referred to as the "Village of the Arts" due to its long-standing connection to creativity and cultural expression. The Bienal de Arte de Vila Nova de Cerveira, held every two years since 1978, is one of the oldest art biennials in Portugal and attracts artists and art enthusiasts from around the world.

Riverfront Ecovia is a scenic cycling, walking and running trail along the River Minho, perfect for enjoying the natural beauty of the area. The Ilha dos Amores is a picturesque river island offering tranquility and beautiful picnic spots. The hill Monte do Cervo  features a giant deer sculpture, symbolizing the town’s name, and provides good views of the river and the Spanish hills beyond.
