VILA NOVA DE MILFONTES

The Alentejo Town where Land Meets the Atlantic

Vila Nova de Milfontes is a picturesque coastal town in the Alentejo region, set along the mouth of the Mira River within the stunning Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Known for its beautiful beaches, dramatic cliffs, and relaxed atmosphere, it is a favorite destination for both local and international travelers. The town has a rich maritime history, dating back to its foundation in 1486 by King John II, and was an important stronghold against pirate attacks, as evidenced by the Fort of São Clemente, built in the 17th century.

The charm of Vila Nova de Milfontes lies in its balance between untouched nature and traditional Portuguese culture. The cobbled streets and whitewashed houses with colorful details create an inviting ambiance, complemented by a selection of cozy restaurants serving fresh seafood and Alentejo-style cuisine. The town’s beaches are among the most beautiful in Portugal, offering a mix of calm river waters and wild Atlantic waves, perfect for swimming, surfing, and kayaking. Some of the most popular beaches include Praia da Franquia, Praia do Farol, and Praia das Furnas.

The surrounding natural park is ideal for hiking and cycling, offering breathtaking coastal trails with panoramic ocean views. Dolphin-watching tours, boat trips, and traditional markets showcasing local crafts and delicacies add to the experience.
