MONSARAZ
The Medieval Village in the Sky
Monsaraz, a medieval hilltop village in the Alentejo region, is a place where time seems to stand still. Overlooking the vast Alqueva Reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Europe, Monsaraz is a town of cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and an imposing castle, all enclosed within well-preserved medieval walls. Its strategic location near the Spanish border made it an important defensive outpost, first occupied by the Romans and Moors, before being retaken by the Portuguese in the 12th century.

Walking through Monsaraz feels like stepping into a living museum, where ancient buildings and historic churches blend harmoniously with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Monsaraz Castle, dating back to the 13th century, is the village’s most striking feature, offering an unobstructed view of the Alentejo plains and the Alqueva Lake. Nearby, the Cromeleque do Xerez, a Neolithic stone circle, is one of the many megalithic monuments in the area, hinting at the region’s ancient past.

Monsaraz is also part of Portugal’s wine country, producing some of the finest Alentejo wines. Its cuisine features hearty dishes like Migas Alentejanas (a dish of bread, garlic, and olive oil), Ensopado de Borrego (lamb stew), and the famous dessert Sericaia with Elvas plums.
