Arcos de Valdevez holds a special place in Portugal's history. In 1140, it was here that the Recontro de Valdevez, a symbolic event in the founding of Portugal, took place. This peaceful confrontation between the forces of Portugal’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques, and the King of León is a pivotal moment in the country’s path to independence. Today, the memory of this event is preserved through monuments and historical narratives that emphasize the town’s importance in the nation’s early history.

Arcos de Valdevez is a gateway to the Peneda-Gerês National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of Portugal’s most stunning natural areas. The River Vez is flowing through the town ant the crystal-clear waters of the river are perfect for paddle boarding, swimming, or strolls along the Ecovia do Vez, a beautiful walking, running and cycling trail. Not far away is Sistelo that is known as the "Portuguese Tibet," Sistelo is a picturesque village with terraced fields carved into the mountainside. It is a haven for hikers and nature lovers.

Arcos de Valdevez is deeply connected to its traditions, which are celebrated through festivals and local events. One of the most well-known is Festa da Senhora da Lapa, a religious festival filled with music, processions, and cultural events. The town is known for its traditional dances, music, and locally made crafts, particularly items made from wool and linen. There are also plenty of small traditional restaurants in the center of the town.
