SINTRA

A Magical blend of History and Nature

Sintra, one of Portugal’s most magical and romantic destinations, is a town nestled in the lush hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, just 30 km northwest of Lisbon. Known for its fairytale palaces, misty forests, and historic charm, Sintra has long been a retreat for Portuguese royalty and aristocrats. The town’s unique architectural heritage and landscape earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995.

The most iconic landmark in Sintra is the Pena Palace, a colorful and extravagant 19th-century Romanticist palace, perched high on a hilltop with breathtaking views over the region. Other highlights include the Moorish Castle, an ancient fortress offering panoramic vistas, and the National Palace of Sintra, recognizable by its twin conical chimneys. A visit to Quinta da Regaleira, an estate filled with mystical gardens, hidden tunnels, and the famous Initiation Well, is like stepping into a world of symbols and legends.

Sintra is not just about history—its natural beauty is equally captivating. The Serra de Sintra hills provide excellent hiking trails, while the nearby Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, offers dramatic cliffs and ocean views. The town’s culinary specialties include Travesseiros, a flaky almond and egg custard pastry, and Queijadas de Sintra, sweet cheese tarts. Sintra is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.
