ESTREMOZ

Where History is Carved in Marble

Estremoz, often called "The White City of Alentejo", is a historic town known for its medieval charm, traditional markets, and world-famous marble. Located 170 km east of Lisbon, Estremoz is part of Portugal’s Marble Triangle, along with Borba and Vila Viçosa. Its locally quarried white and pink marble has been used in some of Portugal’s most iconic buildings, including the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.

The town is dominated by the Estremoz Castle, a 13th-century fortress that once housed Queen Saint Isabel, whose legend remains in local history. The castle’s Torre de Menagem (Keep Tower), made entirely of white marble, offers spectacular views over the Alentejo plains. Every Saturday, Estremoz hosts one of Portugal’s best markets, where vendors sell local pottery, cheeses, cured meats, and regional wines.

Estremoz is also home to UNESCO-recognized Bonecos de Estremoz, colorful handcrafted clay figurines representing Portuguese rural life and traditions. Its local cuisine is deeply rooted in Alentejo’s agricultural traditions, featuring dishes like Migas com Entrecosto (garlic-infused bread mash with pork ribs) and Ensopado de Borrego (lamb stew), best enjoyed with a glass of full-bodied Alentejo wine.
