MARVAO
The Fortress in the Clouds
Marvão is a medieval village in the Alentejo region, located 860 meters above sea level on the Serra de São Mamede mountain range. Its remote hilltop location gives it an almost mythical presence, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The village has a long history, dating back to the Moorish period, when it was fortified by Ibn Marwan, from whom it takes its name. Later, it played a key role in the Christian reconquest and the Portuguese Restoration War, with its castle and walls symbolizing resilience.

Marvão’s well-preserved medieval character makes it feel untouched by time. The Marvão Castle, built in the 13th century, dominates the skyline, with its stone ramparts providing breathtaking viewpoints. The village’s narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, and ancient gates contribute to its charm. The annual Chestnut Festival, held in November, is a highlight, celebrating the region’s chestnut harvest with traditional music, crafts, and seasonal delicacies.
