BICYCLING ROADS AND TRAILS

Casa das Descobertas: A Haven for Road and Mountain Biking Enthusiasts

The bicycling opportunities around Casa das Descobertas are exceptional. The area boasts an extensive network of small roads stretching across the countryside, marked on maps and inviting exploration. Most roads have well-maintained asphalt surfaces and minimal traffic, making them ideal for riding a road bike. For mountain bikes (MTB), numerous scenic trails along rivers, through the mountains, across vineyards, and parallel to the coast offer diverse and exciting routes for all skill levels.

We frequently choose the Ecovia trails when mountain biking. These trails follow the Lima River and coastal paths, taking us through breathtaking landscapes. The proximity to the water provides a refreshing breeze, even on the hottest summer days. Similar routes can be enjoyed for road biking by choosing parallel roads that offer the same beautiful scenery without venturing off-road.

Another very nice area for bicycling is the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Here, you can find anything from advanced single-track for MTB to small roads perfect for road bikes. The park not only offers beautiful nature but also highly effective training with a lot of climbing in altitude.

A fantastic area for riding road bikes is also north of the Lima River. Climbing towards Cerquido and Arga de Baixo will give you a very good elevation. From there, you can follow small but good roads to Caminha and take the national road (N13) down to Viana do Castello and then return to Casa das Descobertas. Alternatively, you head further north towards Calheiros and continue to Labrujo and Paredes de Coura. From there, you find small roads west down to Barrio and back home to Casa das Descobertas.
