Freixo and Mato are villages within walking distance of Casa das Descobertas, where you can find several good shops and restaurants. We often take our morning walk to Freixo for coffee or an evening walk to the genuine local taverna in Mato for their fantastic grilled garlic chicken and steak. We do most of our grocery shopping at the supermarkets in Freixo that sell lots of locally produced food.

Both villages date back to at least the 11th century and offer a fascinating blend of history, myth, and culture. Their history is closely tied to Freixo´s and Matos´s roles in regional religious and feudal systems. Their location in fertile lands made them a critical part of the local agricultural production, which has always been central to their economy and way of life.

In the central square of Freixo, there are several nice cafes and restaurants, two supermarkets, a butcher, a fishmonger, a pharmacy, and small shops. Local markets also offer groceries, local handicrafts, and more. In Mato, you will find a nice traditional taverna.
